Mindset is the way we think about things every day.  This can change so much even within a day or week.

I see examples all the time with the kids we tutor who have settled into a mindset of anxiousness, fear and in some cases a loss of hope. This loss of hope not only involves the specific student but the surrounding family too.

Let me tell you about a solo Dad in Kerikeri who is raising two girls alone.  His daughter is a Yr 8 this year.  His mindset is he is struggling to maintain a positive attitude to life generally when money is short constantly and he is so aware of the help his daughter needs.  His daughter’s mindset is that she is ‘dumb, useless and there must be something wrong with me’ because she can’t keep up with the maths in class. I believe ultimately that to do anything great, you have to be able to trust yourself and believe in your capabilities. Success is not something that just happens but something you create. You have to have the confidence to banish any negative voices in your head. I have times when self doubt happens but I place great importance on having things in place like personal exercise, sleep, family time etc

I believe we need

• To be flexible
• To allow ourselves to be inspired
• To be strict with ourselves and engage in positive self- talk
• To laugh at yourself.
