Welcome to Carla Innis

Literacy expert and passionate educator

Hello! My name is Carla Innis and I am excited to be joining the impact tutoring team as an in-person tutor. I live in Pirongia with my husband and am a proud Mum of three children aged 16, 14 and 10 years old.
I grew up in Ngaroma, attending Korakonui School, and then in Te Awamutu from the age of 13 where I attended Te Awamutu College. After working and travelling for a little while I returned to the area and completed a Bachelor of Science Degree at the University of Waikato which led to me working for the Department of Conservation which I absolutely loved. I worked in full time and contract positions there for 12 years before deciding to head into the field of education, and so returned to University to complete a Post Graduate Diploma in Teaching.

In my free time I enjoy reading - both fiction and non-fiction and spending time with my family. I love being creative and would like to get back into mosaicking, which I used to do a lot of, and creating some garden art. I enjoy gardening and have a Diploma in Herbal Medicine so often grow herbs for teas and enjoy learning about plant science to support my learning in this area.
I am teaching in a job share position at a local school which I thoroughly enjoy.

I am always honoured to be part of my students learning journey and love seeing them thrive under a caring and supportive classroom environment. My natural curiosity to all manner of things and genuine love of learning ensures I make learning interesting and engaging for my students. I strive to cultivate a learning environment where questions are welcomed and encouraged to ensure the best possible learning outcomes are achieved.

Being of an empathetic nature helps me to recognise that each student is a unique individual with their own strengths, challenges and interests. In recognising this I am able to create an environment where students feel valued, understood and empowered to reach their full potential. I love to bring in a bit of humour within my teaching because who doesn't like to smile as they learn!
